14. The Curious Case of PolyFeather

The friends walked into Middleland, still a bit shaken up from the fight they were in just minutes earlier. They decided to go right to the tavern to calm their nerves. After getting directions from an NPC on the street, the friends walked through the town to the tavern.

Middleland was located in the middle of Viridian, hence the name. It was a medium-sized town which somewhat reminded the friends of Lakewind – average in every way. Though Viridian wasn't a popular destination for most players, some high-level players went there in search of treasure and to gain experience from the powerful monsters known to inhabit the area. With Middleland being in the center of the continent, it's where most players would teleport to when they wanted to go to Viridian. Because of that, the friends saw players appearing out of thin air on the streets and others disappearing. There were several players standing on street corners waiting for their friends to show up.

They got to the tavern which was about half full. Most of the patrons were players but there were a few NPCs in the there, too. The friends got a table and ordered food and drinks. They were all really hungry and thirsty after the fight they'd just been in.

“I still can't get over those talking monsters,” Stephanie said.

“I know,” Randi replied. “That was crazy!”

The friends continued to talk about their strange encounter with the wizard and his talking monsters. While they were laughing about how weird it was, someone sitting at a nearby table turned around and looked at the friends.

“Sounds like you met PolyFeather!” he said.

“Who?” Mitch asked.

The man stood up and walked over to the friends' table. Underneath him read, LouDog89, level 96 human fighter. He was almost as tall as Luke with big, broad shoulders and long, blond hair.

“PolyFeather. You know, the wizard.”

“The wizard with the talking velociraptor and ape?” Alyssa asked.

"Yeah, that's PolyFeather. Oh man, that dude's crazy. Attacked us with a talking giraffe and a half ostrich, half orc one time – both of them vicious sons-a-bitches. I call the half ostrich, half orc an orcrich,” LouDog89 said, then turned and pointed to another player at his table. “My associate here calls it an astrorc. You're free to call it whatever you like."

“Who is he?” Chris asked. “W...Why is he called PolyFeather? Is it a p...player or a NPC?"

“No one knows,” LouDog89 replied.

"No one knows what?” Chris asked. “I asked like three qu...qu...questions. You gave me one answer."

"Same answer for all three questions,” LouDog89 said. “No one knows who he is, where he's from, or why he does what he does. It's just PolyFeather. You got attacked by PolyFeather."

“Yup,” his associate said, turning around but not getting up from his table. “He just shows up with a couple of weird talking monsters and tells them to attack you. As soon as you defeat them – if you defeat them – he just vanishes into thin air. Fuckin' PolyFeather, man.
